National Dance Day 2016: A Complete Guide

Every year on the last Saturday in July, the nation comes together to celebrate dance. That’s right, it’s National Dance Day again this July 30, and Fred Astaire Dance studios is a proud participant in the exciting celebrations. So get up, get out and get dancing because this National Dance Day will be one for the books!

What Is National Dance Day?

National Dance Day was created in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe, the co-creator of “So You Think You Can Dance” and co-president of the Dizzy Feet Foundation. The day is an annual celebration of dance, which promotes dance as a fun way to maintain a healthy lifestyle and fight obesity. Throughout the day, Americans are encouraged to dance – on their own, with friends and family or at any of the various National Dance Day events held all across the country.

How Can I Participate?

National Dance Day events are happening all across the country during the last week in July. The largest events include:

  • National Dance Day at the Music Center in Los Angeles. Dizzy Feet Foundation joins with the Music Center in Los Angeles for a west coast celebration at downtown’s Grand Park.
  • National Dance Day at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Senator Eleanor Holmes Norton hosts a day of performances and activities for the entire family!
  • National Dance Day at The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando. The free community dance festivities will take place outside the city’s new state-of-the-art venue in downtown Orlando.

And there are hundreds of local events all across the country, too! Check here to find out if there are any happening near you. All host venue activities are free and open to the public.
