The Swing of Things: Dancing for the Joy of It!

The Swing of Things

We all know that there are great physical and mental benefits to dancing, but there’s no need to overthink it! As we’ll learn in this month’s edition of “The Swing of Things,” Sometimes you just want to dance for the joy of it. In this age of smartphones, we are sometimes lucky enough to catch it all on video.

Dancing With the Kids

All politics aside, this video of first daughter Ivanka Trump has racked up thousands of views. Trump posted the video on her Instagram account and wrote; “Little moments matter, especially for working moms!! #TBT to an after-work dance party with my boys.”

We Interrupt This Day…

Flash mobs may seem so 2010, but you can still pull one off in 2017. Now, calling this group of dancers at Richland College in Dallas, Texas, a “mob” might be a bit of a stretch but you can’t fault them for making the best out of a boring day spent hitting the books.

Sometimes dancing is part of a cultural ritual, like at a wedding or a party. You can bet you’ll see plenty of foot stomping and hand clapping at the annual springtime dance platforms of prom, recitals, and festivals!

Prom Time Pointers

Prom time can mean lots of awkwardness for a lot of students, so some of the kids at Herriman High School in Utah decided to roll with it and put together a fun video of the “Top Ten Dance Moves for Herriman Prom 2017.” You got to hand it to them; at least they were having fun.

Little Celebrity Ballet Recital

Blue Ivy Carter is pretty used to being the star of the show, but she surely comes by it naturally. The 5-year-old daughter of superstars Beyoncé and Jay-Z certainly enjoyed her moment in the spotlight during her ballet recital. Arms are spread with energy and kicks are thrown with gusto — really, isn’t that what we all hope for!

A Little Louisiana Lagniappe

Finally, take a trip down south to Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, for the famous Crawfish Festival. The tasty mudbug might be in the name, but the festival is a celebration of more than just food. It’s all about Cajun and Creole culture. All weekend long folks dance to the sounds of Cajun, Zydeco, and Swamp Pop music with contests to see who has the best moves.
