Start a New Hobby on the Dance Floor

Decide to skip marking the new year by making a New Year’s resolution and start a new hobby today at Fred Astaire Dance Studios.

Every year, millions of Americans start the new year by making resolutions to eat healthier and exercise regularly. About one in four Americans make a New Year’s resolution. Many people resolve to exercise, eat healthy, lose weight, or save money. Yet, less than 8 percent of people actually stick with it. Sadly, most people break their resolutions by the end of January.

People are more likely to keep their New Year’s resolutions if they start with small goals, document their progress, and rely on someone to hold them accountable. Rewarding yourself when you hit a milestone also provides extra incentive to keep your resolution.

Setting intentions and goals is important, but Fred Astaire Dance Studios encourages people to start each morning with a fresh outlook. Don’t wait until a certain day on the calendar to get healthy or to start a new hobby, take action now. Fred Astaire Dance Studios offers a wide variety of lessons designed to teach you the time-honored tradition of ballroom dancing. Our unique teaching method includes a three-tiered system of regularly scheduled private lessons, group classes, and practice parties. Beginner programs teach new students the step patterns and techniques to move comfortably around the dance floor, and our trophy system allows people to keep track of their progress.

Health Benefits of Ballroom Dancing

In addition to learning a fun hobby in a welcoming atmosphere, ballroom dancing lessons provide a low-impact workout that can help you burn fat and lower blood pressure. The American Heart Association recently started a new campaign encouraging people to “Get Down” with blood pressure by dancing to their favorite tune. High blood pressure puts people at a higher risk for heart disease and stroke. Thirty minutes of ballroom dancing can burn 200 to 400 calories. Regular dance lessons will help increase flexibility and improve range of motion. It also can help lower the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes and promote increased lung capacity.

Watch Dancers Hit the Dance Floor

Dancers on “Dancing With The Stars” make burning calories look easy when they perform on the dance competition show. The following three clips feature JoJo Siwa and her dance partner Jenna Johnson. The pair mark the first same-sex couple to perform on “Dancing With The Stars” after 29 seasons. Siwa, an alum of the popular “Dance Moms” reality show, came out earlier this year and is raising awareness for the LGBTQ community.

In this first clip, the couple performs the quickstep to “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” by Jet.

Take a look at Johnson and Siwa’s freestyle dance to “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga.

The pair dance to the jazzy “Anything Goes” by District 78 ft. featuring singer Patrice Covington on Dancing With The Stars’ special horror night.
